About Canada Jetlines
Canada Jetlines: A Short-Lived Leap in Canadian Ultra-Low-Cost Travel
Canada Jetlines launched with big ambitions. Founded in 2013, the airline finally obtained its Air Operator’s Certificate in late August 2022, and launched its inaugural flight from Toronto to Calgary on September 22, 2022, using Airbus A320 aircraft. Positioned as a leisure-focused ULCC, Jetlines aimed to expand rapidly—planning a fleet of 15 aircraft by 2025 and targeting popular sun destinations like Las Vegas, Cancun, Orlando, and Montego Bay
However, the airline struggled from the start. Delays in certification and post-pandemic volatility created a challenging environment. Jetlines recorded C$11.5 million in net losses in 2023, contributing to an accumulated deficit that reached nearly C$32 million by early 2024. Despite efforts to raise capital—including loans, investor outreach, and plans to file for creditor protection—Jetlines ceased scheduled operations on August 15, 2024, announcing a temporary shutdown while seeking restructuring.
Passengers bore the brunt of the collapse. Reddit reports reveal severe service lapses:
“Do not book with Canada Jetline. Our flight was cancelled but no one let us know…and we had to book and pay for the next flight home…cost us $2500.”
Others described booking headaches, unhelpful customer service, and baggage fee mishaps.
Despite occasional praise for low fares, the airline’s unstable operations, thin route network, and limited fleet made for a fragile business model. Analysts pointed to Canada’s small population, vast geography, and dominance by Air Canada and WestJet as structural barriers for newcomers.

The Bigger Picture
The rise and fall of Canada Jetlines embodies the harsh realities of ULCCs in Canada. While the airline promised low-cost travel with a modern A320-strong fleet and sunny route network, financial constraints, fierce competition, and service complaints undermined its potential. Its story serves as a cautionary tale—and a reminder—that in Canadian aviation, sustainable operations are as essential as bold strategy.
