About Great Dane Airlines
Great Dane Airlines – A Brief Journey in Danish Aviation
Great Dane Airlines was a Danish airline based in Aalborg, Denmark, that operated from 2019 to 2021. Despite its short-lived existence, the airline made a notable impact on the regional aviation landscape.
Founding and Operations
Established in 2018, Great Dane Airlines commenced operations in June 2019. The airline's inaugural flight was a charter service from Aalborg to Rhodes, Greece, followed by its first scheduled flight to Dublin, Ireland, later that month.
The airline operated a fleet of Embraer 195 aircraft, providing both charter and scheduled services to various European destinations. Some of the cities served included Palma de Mallorca, Madeira, Edinburgh, and Bologna.
Challenges and Bankruptcy
Despite its promising start, Great Dane Airlines faced significant financial challenges. In 2020, the airline reported a loss of DKK 50.6 million, more than double the loss incurred in 2019.
The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated these financial difficulties, leading to a sharp decline in air travel demand. In October 2021, Great Dane Airlines filed for bankruptcy and ceased operations, marking the end of its brief tenure in the aviation industry.
Legacy
Although short-lived, Great Dane Airlines contributed to the Danish aviation sector by offering additional travel options and fostering competition. Its operations highlighted the challenges faced by regional carriers in an increasingly competitive and volatile market.
