About SilkAir
SilkAir – Singapore Airlines' Regional Wing (1992–2021)
SilkAir, once the regional wing of Singapore Airlines, played a pivotal role in connecting Singapore to numerous destinations across Asia and Australia. Established in 1975 as Tradewinds Charters, the airline initially focused on leisure destinations using aircraft leased from Singapore Airlines. In 1989, it commenced scheduled services as Tradewinds Airlines, serving five destinations from Singapore's Changi and Seletar Airports. A significant rebranding in 1992 led to the adoption of the SilkAir name, signaling its evolution into a premier regional carrier.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, SilkAir expanded its network extensively, adding routes to India, China, and various Southeast Asian countries. The airline operated a fleet that included Boeing 737s and Airbus A320 family aircraft, catering to both business and leisure travelers. Notably, SilkAir was the first Asian carrier to offer handheld portable video-on-demand entertainment using the DigEplayer 5500 on selected flights.
In May 2018, Singapore Airlines announced plans to merge SilkAir into its mainline operations. This strategic move aimed to streamline services and provide a more cohesive travel experience. As part of the integration, SilkAir's fleet underwent significant cabin upgrades, including the installation of lie-flat business class seats, to align with Singapore Airlines' product offerings.
The merger was completed on 28 January 2021, marking the end of SilkAir's operations as a separate entity. By that time, SilkAir had grown to a fleet of 33 aircraft and served over 40 destinations, carrying approximately 4.9 million passengers in its final full year of operation.
SilkAir's legacy endures through its contributions to regional aviation and its role in expanding Singapore Airlines' reach. The integration has allowed Singapore Airlines to offer a unified and enhanced travel experience across its entire network.
