About SKS Airways
SKS Airways: Connecting Malaysia's Island Destinations
SKS Airways was a Malaysian regional airline that operated from January 2022 until January 2025, focusing on connecting the country's lesser-known island destinations. Headquartered in Johor Bahru, the airline aimed to enhance domestic tourism by providing direct flights to islands like Tioman, Redang, and Pangkor.
Inception and Operations
Founded in November 2017, SKS Airways received its Air Operator's Certificate in October 2021 and commenced its first commercial flight on January 25, 2022, from Subang to Pangkor. The airline operated a fleet of two De Havilland DHC-6-300 Twin Otter aircraft, suitable for short takeoff and landing, making them ideal for the short runways of island airports. With its hub at Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang, SKS Airways provided essential connectivity to remote island communities and promoted local tourism.
Expansion Plans and Challenges
In May 2023, SKS Airways announced plans to lease ten Embraer E195-E2 jets to expand its network and operations from Subang Airport. However, the airline faced challenges in securing the necessary slots at Subang Airport, leading to the cancellation of the lease agreement in July 2024. Financial constraints and operational difficulties further compounded the airline's challenges.
Cessation of Operations
On November 20, 2023, SKS Airways suspended all flights, and despite efforts to secure funding and restructure, the airline officially ceased operations on January 16, 2025. The cessation highlighted the difficulties faced by niche carriers in sustaining operations amidst competitive pressures and infrastructural limitations.
Legacy
While SKS Airways had a brief operational period, its efforts to enhance connectivity to Malaysia's island destinations were commendable. The airline's focus on underserved routes brought attention to the potential of regional air travel in promoting tourism and economic development in remote areas.
