About Tigerair Singapore
Tigerair Singapore – A Legacy of Affordable Regional Travel
Tigerair Singapore, originally known as Tiger Airways, was established on December 12, 2003, as a low-cost carrier headquartered in Singapore. Commencing operations on September 15, 2004, with its inaugural flight to Bangkok, the airline aimed to make air travel more accessible across the Asia-Pacific region.
Operating primarily from Singapore Changi Airport, Tigerair rapidly expanded its network to include destinations in Southeast Asia, China, India, and Australia. The airline's fleet consisted mainly of Airbus A320 aircraft, configured in an all-economy layout, catering to budget-conscious travelers.
In 2010, Tiger Airways Holdings, the parent company of Tigerair Singapore, was listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange. By October 2014, Singapore Airlines acquired a majority stake in Tiger Airways Holdings, integrating Tigerair into its portfolio of carriers.
To streamline its low-cost operations, Singapore Airlines established Budget Aviation Holdings in May 2016, encompassing both Tigerair and Scoot. This move set the stage for the eventual merger of the two airlines.
On July 25, 2017, Tigerair officially merged with Scoot, consolidating their operations under the Scoot brand. While the Tigerair brand was retired, its Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) was retained, and Scoot adopted Tigerair's IATA code "TR" and ICAO code "TGW."
Tigerair Singapore played a significant role in shaping the low-cost aviation landscape in Asia. Its commitment to affordable travel and regional connectivity laid the groundwork for the expanded services now offered by Scoot.
