Monaco Flight

Monaco is amazing but easy to get wrong if you’re not ready. It’s tiny, smaller than Central Park and very pricey. Flightd helped me learn the tips I wish I knew so you can enjoy this special place without mistakes.

London City

Geography Mistake: Monaco ≠ Just Monte Carlo

I spent my first day thinking Monte Carlo was Monaco. Oops. Here’s the breakdown: Monte Carlo is the glitzy area with the casino, designer shops, and that iconic James Bond vibe. Monaco Ville is the old town on the Rock, home to the Prince’s Palace. La Condamine sits by the harbor, offering more affordable restaurants and markets. Fontvieille is the newer neighborhood, built on land reclaimed from the sea.

Explore them all. Monaco Ville feels like medieval Europe, while La Condamine feels surprisingly grounded.

Your Legs Will Hate You (Until You Find the Secret Elevators)

Monaco is basically built on a cliff. I thought I was in decent shape until I spent a morning hiking straight up tiny cobblestone streets. What saved me were the free public elevators and escalators scattered throughout the city, which locals use daily and so should you. Plus, the reliable and cheap public buses are a godsend, especially on hot days.

Pro tip: Download a map that shows elevator locations or ask your hotel.

The Money Situation: Monaco Will Bleed You Dry

Monaco isn’t just expensive, it's Monaco expensive. A basic hotel costs more than luxury suites elsewhere. Instead, stay in Nice or Menton and take the 20 minute scenic train to Monaco. If you stay in Monaco, book months ahead and expect premium prices.

Dress Code Drama: Don’t Show Up Looking Like Me

I made the mistake of showing up to the Monte Carlo Casino in flip flops. The doorman’s expression will haunt me forever.

Rules to remember:

Casino daytime: collared shirt and long pants. Evenings may require a jacket and tie in some rooms. Upscale restaurants expect smart casual at minimum. Overall, dressing polished makes wandering around much more comfortable.

The Casino Isn’t Vegas with a French Accent

The Monte Carlo Casino is elegant, historic and surprisingly subdued. You won’t find drunken party goers or neon lights. What you will find is:

  • Quiet, serious tables

  • Impeccably dressed guests

  • Stunning Belle Époque architecture

Bring your passport, set a strict budget, and just enjoy the vibe even if you don’t gamble.

Eating Well Without Going Broke

Tourist areas near the palace and casino will charge €40+ for a basic lunch. But good, affordable food does exist in Monaco.

Head to La Condamine’s market:

Socca is a crispy chickpea pancake that’s ridiculously good. Barbajuan are fried pastries filled with chard and ricotta. For real flavor and better prices, go straight to local vendors.

Ask locals where they eat. They’ll point you to hidden gems without the markup.

Getting Around Without Losing Your Mind (or Wallet)

Don’t rent a car.

  • Streets are narrow

  • Parking is expensive

  • Stress levels: high

Instead:

  • Use buses (a €5 day pass is all you need)

  • Elevators & escalators are built into the city infrastructure

  • Walk strategically, not heroically

When to Visit (And When to Avoid)

Summer is gorgeous but chaotic if it’s Grand Prix week, book 6+ months ahead and expect double prices.
Autumn, my favorite, offers perfect weather, fewer crowds, and open restaurant tables.
Winter is peaceful and less polished, giving you a glimpse of the "real" Monaco.

The People Aren’t All Billionaires

I was intimidated, expecting everyone to be models or millionaires. But many normal people work here: teachers, chefs, shopkeepers. Just be respectful, not starstruck. Treat everyone like a person, and you’ll have surprisingly normal interactions in a place that feels anything but ordinary.

Final Honest Take: Monaco Is Worth It But Only If You Know How It Works

Monaco isn’t for everyone. It’s fancy, expensive, and yes sometimes a little much. But it’s also stunning, safe, and completely unique.

TL;DR:

  • Bring dressy clothes.

  • Use the elevators.

  • Don’t stay in Monaco unless your budget is serious.

  • Explore beyond Monte Carlo.

  • Enjoy the views and people watching.

When you get it right, Monaco feels like you’ve stepped into a secret world that wasn’t built for tourists but still lets you in. And that sunset from the palace gardens? Flightd is worth every cent.
